Because combining glasses with a helmet makes sense in terms of both adjustments and aesthetics, Kask launched itself into this highly competitive market with its Koo brand a few months ago now. The range was expanded in 2018 with three new models, two of which are dedicated to cycling, after the initial release of the Open when the brand was launched. The Open Cube testToday's models take up most of the features of the Open, while abandoning the total rimming of the lenses.. A benefit for the look, here more discreet and less "massive" in our opinion on small faces. Note that the Koo Open Cube are offered in 12 colors, and in two widths, with specific dimensions named Asian Fit available on request. Too bad, however, that by combining them with the Kask Protone, the objective is not completely fulfilled. Excellent in many areas (ventilation, comfort, finish), the Protone has a frame for occipital support that goes back behind the ears and which can come into conflict with the arms of the glasses. Fortunately, these are of a completely classic length and perfectly flat, which ultimately turns out to be not very annoying when riding.
Zeiss lenses
In addition to the choice of colors, the Open Cubes are supplied in a beautifully made box, with a Zeiss mount and two interchangeable screens, which is a guarantee of quality.
Let's emphasize the importance of lenses for sports glasses compliant with European standards, which not only protect the eyes from UV rays, but also protect in the event of a fall by bending rather than breaking. At a time when many counterfeits are circulating, precision is not useless. The first of the category 2 screens protects against UV rays while offering fairly clear visibility even when passing through the shade, with a light transmission of 21%.
The second, transparent, lets 85% of light through. They are very easily interchangeable, even at the last moment before setting off on an outing, and there is no need to struggle to find the right location on the frame of the glasses.
Same thing for the nose rest, which clips and unclips easily from the single screen, but without lacking support once in place. The Koo Open Cube are also supplied with two interchangeable nose rests, each of which can be placed in two positions, to bring the screen closer or further away from the face. Both are intended to raise the glasses more or less once placed on the nose.
The originality of Koo Open Cube glasses
Like the Open, the Open Cube is stored using a system of rotating branches. A feature that allows, thanks to three position notches, to tilt the screen more or less in relation to the face, to limit the appearance of fog for example, or to limit sweat inside the screen. However, even used in fog or with a high degree of humidity, the Open Cube prevents fogging, thanks to the vents between the screen and the frame. Vents that even create a stream of air that is slightly surprising during early morning departures.
In use
While riding, the Koo Open Cube are completely forgotten, despite the slight conflict of the branches with the helmet straps and the fact that they do not seem tight on the face, which could lead one to fear that one would always have to readjust them. But in reality, The silicone inside the flat temples and the rubber on the nose rest are enough to keep them perfectly in place, even while sprinting or turning your head to converse with your companions route. Only a little drizzle can be unpleasant on the screen, but that's the case with all glasses. Visibility is perfect, even with tinted lenses and in gloomy conditions.. The transition between full sun and shaded areas is not a problem, as is the case with some lenses. The lenses do not seem excessively sensitive to scratches, in addition to covering the eyes well. Finally, the absence of a frame under the lenses improves visibility compared to the Open. The Open Cube are therefore glasses lightweight, comfortable, well finished and with good features to ensure practicality and durability. Not given away, they do however come with a nice box and two screens.
