Critérium du Dauphiné 2020: the route map, details and stage profile

Amaury Sport Organisation today unveiled the route for the 72nd Critérium du Dauphiné, which will take place from May 31 to June 7. No prologue or time trial on the program for the eight stages of the 2020 edition, but some very beautiful climbs for a demanding route and a total of 1 kilometers from Clermont-Ferrand to Megève.

The Critérium du Dauphiné is visiting the city of Clermont-Ferrand for the first time in its history, where the start of the first stage will be given on May 31. Note that no prologue or time trial will be offered on the 2020 route. It is in the series of climbs that characterize the stages in the Alps that the difference will have to be made. And in particular on the two stages of the weekend that will end in Megève.

It is always possible to innovate, to surprise: the Alpine meeting of the cycling season is settling this year in the capital of the Massif Central for the first time. To launch the 72nd edition, however, it is on a tried and tested method that the debates will begin, since the first stage will be played on a course almost identical to that of the 14th stage of the Tour de France, towards Lyon. Also hilly, the route of Saint-Christo-en-Jarez and its final circuit proposed the next day could select only the finishers most resistant to the slides. For the third day, the one who will present himself in the final of Saint-Vallier, with a big kilometer of climb at an average gradient of 12%, could even eliminate them in favor of the sharpest punchers.

In Bourg-de-Péage, the tradition of sprint finishes that sticks to the communes of the Rhone Valley should be respected. On the other hand, that of the time trial on Wednesday has been abandoned in order to open up as many tactical options as possible to the title contenders: for the first time since 1947, there will not be a single kilometer covered against the clock on the Dauphiné. The entry into the purely monstrous sequencetagnarde will therefore allow the climbers to position themselves and gauge themselves from the 5th stage, the finale of which will be launched in the "very rock'n'roll" descent following the Maillet hill, according to Gilles Maignan. The next day, the riders will partly take their marks on the routes of the 17th stage of the Tour de France, notably crossing the Col de la Madeleine. The great battle of the peaks is however expected on the two stages of the weekend, with 4700 m of positive elevation gain to swallow on Saturday by climbing for example to the Col de la Croix Fry, to the Aravis, to Bisanne before aiming for the Megève aerodrome. It is on a loop also with high tension that the final stage will be played out, taking a peloton probably scattered on the Côte de Domancy, then to the Col de Romme and to the Colombière, before finishing with the severe Côte de Cordon. An ideal terrain for chamois. It should also be noted that Savoie Mont-Blanc Tourisme has formalized the continuation of its partnership with the event as supporter of the white jersey for the next three years.
