Berk: Slovenian Excellence
Founded in 2014 in Slovenia by Jure Berk and Andraž Vehovar, “Berk-Vehovar Composites” has established itself as a specialist company in cycling components. Renowned for its ultra-lightweight products, the brand stands out for its clever mix of innovation, comfort and quality.
Their flagship saddle, the Lupina, is iconic. It was even used by Tadej Pogacar during the 2018 Tour de l'Avenir, proving its effectiveness at the highest level.
But Berk doesn't stop there. The brand also offers lightweight shoes and a carbon frame entirely handmade in Slovenia, adaptable to your needs. An artisanal approach that will become rare in 2025!
A lightweight, high-performance saddle
At 104 g, the Berk Lupina is one of the lightest saddles on the market. It allows you to save around a hundred grams compared to many competing models.
100g is the difference between two Specialized frames, one from the S-Works range and the other from the Pro range. But beyond the weight, its real challenge is to guarantee optimal comfort, essential for long rides.
To explore this model in all its facets, we collected the testimonies of Nicolas and Rémi, two convinced users. Discover their opinions with this interview conducted below.
Feedback: Nicolas and Rémi give their testimony
What made you choose Berk Lupina?
Nicolas : In 2020 I had a bike built for me, a Colnago V3RS, for which I was looking for components a little Premium, beautiful and and, too. My friend Rémi, who is a big fan of gear and rather up to date on everything that is lighter, told me about the Berk saddles. I was immediately attracted by the very low weight (104 g), the super refined design and especially the very positive feedback that we can read on the forum Weight Weenies. Rémi, too, switched to the Berk Lupina for fairly similar reasons, with mainly the weight and build quality in his sights. The fact also that many members of Weight Weenies saying good things about the product was an essential element in the choice.
Rémi : The quality/weight/price ratio. The omnipresence of this saddle in the montagIt's light on the forums.
Before switching to this saddle, what model did you use?
Nicolas : I was on a Fizik Arione 00.
Rémi : A Selle Italia Kit Carbonio.
Why did you choose a specific width?
Nicolas : When I bought my V3RS I did a Retül study. The only interesting thing I got out of it was that I felt very comfortable on a 143 mm wide saddle that I was able to try during the study. The study also seemed to show that a slightly wider saddle could be even better, so I naturally turned to the 150 mm.
Rémi : I started with a 132 then a 144 (short) on which I feel better on long distances. I have testto find out which one was most comfortable for my butt.
How long have you been riding the Lupina?
Nicolas : I bought my first Lupina in 2020 followed by a second in 2024. I only go out on route with and I have accumulated about 20000 km on these saddles. I do all types of distances, from the very short 1h30 to outings of more than 6 or 7 hours. I have also done cyclosportives like the Volcanique and the Etape du Tour.
Rémi : I have been riding Lupinas for four years.
What is the comfort level?
Nicolas : Rémi and I have never had to complain about comfort, despite the length of our respective outings. I find that ultimately it is a component that could almost be forgotten. I really like this impression of immediately finding my position in the saddle after getting into the dancer's position. Despite the side Light of the saddle I never felt any weakness or lack of rigidity at the rails. For me it is only positive. My Arione 00 was a very flat saddle that I liked for its racy / steed / and, too but I think it was not at all adapted to my morphology. The Berk Lupina is a saddle hollowed out at the perineal area. I see it as a big comfort contribution, given the fact that my pilot positiontagIt is placed quite low and I have a fairly significant pelvic tilt.
Rémi : Very comfortable once properly adjusted. I did the Etape du Tour on it without any problems.
What areas for improvement would there be?
Nicolas : Very difficult for me to answer this question until I find the perfect product. I would like to have the opportunity to try a 3D mesh saddle to see the difference in comfort and support compared to my Berk. Maybe after that I could tell you what could be improved on the saddle. After that I do not forget why I turned to Berk, one of the main reasons was the weight.
Rémi : A little more comfort?
To summarize, what are the strengths of the model and would you recommend the model?
Nicolas : The strong points are clearly the manufacturing quality, its weight, its price which remains quite moderate I think for a component of this level. I like the slightly exclusive side, you don't see it on many bikes. My first Lupina was used in all weathers. Thus, the leather started to mark after a while. Berk offers the possibility of redoing the foams and the leather for a flat rate of €50, including return costs. This is an advantagetagand a guarantee of the brand's indisputable seriousness. You should also know that the relationship with the Berk brand is super easy, responses to emails arrive very quickly.
I would recommend it without any worries and Rémi does the same to anyone who asks him questions about his saddle. I think everything has been said previously: weight, design, quality, durability, price, after-sales service, exclusivity. I like to go riding on 4h30 / 5h or more rides quite regularly. I do one or two cyclos with big elevation changes in the year. I would never have kept a saddle that would destroy my posterior if it did not give me satisfaction. Rémi launches on the Haute Route Alps next August, there is absolutely no question of a possible change of saddle in anticipation of this event.
Rémi : For the qualities, I would say above all: weight, comfort and correct price for a component of this quality. It is a product that I systematically recommend to everyone who asks me. It is the best saddle I have ever had in terms of quality/weight/price.
Within 3bikes.fr, The feeling is the same regarding the characteristics of the Berk Lupina with an excellent quality/price/weight ratio. At €319, although expensive for a saddle, the product is on the lower end compared to the competition from other brands for the same range of services.
