Bicycle market 2024: Buycycle reveals the rise of second-hand

In 2024, the European bicycle industry showed resilience and strong growth potential despite the current economic challenges. The second-hand segment managed to hold its own, as evidenced by, buycycle, the leading online seller of high-end second-hand bikes, has recorded an 11x increase in sales in France this year. Through observations and studies conducted on its platform, buycycle delivers its annual report on the major trends in a booming market and looks to the future.

In a rapidly changing landscape, consumers are increasingly turning to second-hand goods, and bicycles are no exception.. The reasons for this are numerous, the most cited are related to environmental or budgetary concerns. Younger generations seem to be the most inclined to welcome this mode of consumption since more than 40% of Generation Z and millennials regularly buy on the second-hand market.

A trend that is confirmed on the buycycle platform, which recorded annual growth multiplied by 4 between 2023 and 2024With over 30 bikes sold and over 000 million unique visitors per month, buycycle is looking at its users' habits at the start of this year to provide key figures for the second-hand bike market.

Among the findings of the report, the following points can be noted in particular:

  • Buying a used bike saves 174 kg of CO2 emissions per bike.
  • Trek, Cannondale and Bianchi brands showed the smallest difference between new and used prices, reflecting their strong resale value and continued demand in the used market.
  • The electric bike also has its place on the second-hand market, with growth of 15,38% on buycycle between 2023 and 2024. It should be noted that on the platform, the average sale price of an electric bike is €3.
  • Triathlon is booming, with sales of triathlon bikes increasing threefold between 3 and 2023
  • Performance-oriented cyclists also buy second-hand, since 70% of the bikes sold in 2024 on buycycle were carbon. 43% of them were equipped with a mechanical group + 27% with electronics).
