Earth Day 2025: Cycling, a key ally in reducing carbon emissions

As Earth Day 2025 approaches, Strava, the platform dedicated to athletes, highlights the rise of bike commuting in France through exclusive data collected in 2024. These figures highlight the concrete impact of cycling as a sustainable mobility solution, revealing a strong trend: cycling is emerging as an active, local, and essential choice.

Paris, champion of bike commuting

The French capital stands out with 14,5 million kilometers traveled by bicycle for commuting in 2024, thus avoiding 3,1 million kilos of CO₂. In Greater Paris, 6 million kilos of CO₂ were saved thanks to cyclists. These figures reflect a collective commitment, reinforced by a remarkable gender balance: in Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, and Val-de-Marne, men and women cycle almost equally to get to work.

Cycling, a new standard

Nearly 75% of trips recorded on Strava are for commuting, confirming that cycling is no longer a marginal practice but a deeply rooted habit. Tuesday at 8 a.m. marks the weekly peak of this two-wheeled revolution, illustrating the massive adoption of cycling as a mode of transportation.

A measurable environmental impact

In 2024, Strava data shows that every pedal stroke counts: cyclists in the Greater Paris region contributed to a more sustainable future by significantly reducing carbon emissions. These figures, compiled from Strava users and Strava Metro—an initiative to improve active mobility infrastructure—prove that everyday actions can transform our relationship with the environment.

A call to action for April 22, 2025

On Earth Day, Strava reminds us that cycling is more than just a means of transportation: it's a lever for building a greener future. Every intentional bike ride brings society closer to sustainable and responsible mobility.
