MET unveils its own wind tunnel and a new Wide Body II Drone

Aerodynamics has always been at the heart of helmet design at MET. From its inception, with the pioneering concept of using the helmet to guide airflow past the shoulders, MET has consistently advanced innovation. Today, the brand presents the new Drone Wide Body II time trial helmet, developed in the “Tube,” MET’s new technologically advanced wind tunnel, built in-house at its headquarters in Italy.

“The Tube”, a unique installation

Specially designed for the aerodynamic and thermal analysis of cycling, the wind tunnel developed with MET is a state-of-the-art facility that allows testhelmets, bikes, rider positionstagand any aerodynamic equipment.

A dedicated installation

“The Tube” is a custom-made, circular wind tunnel optimized for testcycling facilities. Completed in 2024, it is now fully operational.

Prototype development

During the development phase of a new high-performance helmet, testUsing different shapes and configurations is essential to find the perfect balance for different rider shapes and positions. Thanks to in-house 3D printers, MET can evaluate multiple solutions in “the Tube” and refine the design.

Multipurpose wind tunnel

"The Tube" has a double configuration, allowing to move from one test with a fake head only at one test with the bike and the cyclist, which allows for multiple scenarios of test. This allows us to evaluate not only the shape of the helmet, but also its interaction with the cyclist, i.e. the system as a whole.

Thermal analysis

"The Tube" is equipped with a headform incorporating thermal sensors across its entire crown. The headform is heated to 38°C, which simulates body temperature under stress. MET measures the temperature drop over time: the faster it occurs, the more efficient the internal air channeling.

athletes

“The Tube” is open to MET partner riders and teams, allowing for work on both products and rider positioning. As a partner of these athletes, MET welcomes its athletes into the MET wind tunnel and supports them in the development of a complete aerodynamic package to achieve an advantagetagand competitive at all levels.

Full Helmet Development Center

“The Tube” is the latest addition to Talamona’s Italian headquarters, completing what is now the most advanced helmet development center in the world. It includes a crash laboratory-tests, virtual analyses, 3D prototyping, and now an aerodynamic and thermal wind tunnel.

Key information about “the Tube”

• Location: MET Headquarters, Talamona, Italy
• Blower type: circular, with controlled temperature and air density
• Wind speed: up to 100 km/h
• Tests: aerodynamic tests and thermal analyses
• Test Yaw angle: adjustable rotation platform from 0° to 30°
• Dual configuration: cyclist and headform configurations

The Wide Body II Drone, the fastest gets even faster

The Drone Wide Body II is the second generation of the helmet that has won numerous World Tour Time Trials and Ironman World Championships.

Improved performance

A new design on the rear, developed in the internal wind tunnel, allows the new Drone II to be 13,5 seconds faster over 40 km of Time Trial than the previous version. This linear design on the rear allows for a lower head position during exercise.

Proven wide design

The unique wide design of the MET Drone channels airflow over the shoulders, significantly reducing turbulence and drag. This translates into valuable energy savings and an advantagetagaerodynamics for the cyclist.

Weight and ventilation

Low-drag air inlets are strategically positioned to reduce turbulence and work with an internal air ducting system to improve ventilation and comfort. At 430 g, it is among the helmets long tail the lightest on the market, offering superior comfort on long-distance Ironman.
