Nearly 5000 km with the Pirelli P Zero Race 26 mm

A high-end, reliable and high-performance tire

Pirelli continues to strengthen its presence in the segment route with its P Zero Race range, designed to combine performance, comfort and reliability. We have testis the version tube type in 26 mm, mounted with latex then TPU inner tube, over more than 5000 km in varied conditions, and different from our first test in 2021. No punctures, excellent handling route, very decent performance: here is our complete and technical feedback, with a direct comparison with the Continental GP5000 S TR, the market benchmark.

The Pirelli P Zero Race 26 mm tires still appeal to inner tube enthusiasts.

Positioning in the Pirelli range

Positioned as a model route high-end inner tube tire from Pirelli, the P Zero Race tube type is aimed at demanding cyclists who do not wish to go tubelessIt fits in the range between the more accessible P Zero Road and the lighter but also less resistant to wear and perforation P Zero Race SL.

TestShown here in its 26 mm version, this tire reaches a measured width of 27,5 mm when mounted on a rim with an internal width of 19 mm, which optimizes the compromise between performance and comfort. Its actual weight, measured at 217 grams, places it among the most competitive models in its category. Displayed at a recommended price From 65 to 75 €, it is found regularly online around From 45 to 55 €, which strengthens its attractiveness compared to competing references.

We already had testThis tire in 2021, a few months after its release. But since 2022, all of Pirelli's high-end production has been repatriated to Italy, to the factory Pirelli of Bollate. While this new version of the tire retains its main characteristics, it nevertheless seems to us to be much more durable than its previous iteration.

Let's also add that the tires testThe tires here were used primarily at much lower pressure than in 2021, which most likely changes the wear level.

The weight is very reasonable compared to the most recent productions, in tubeless.

Actual width and rim compatibility:

Mounted on rims with an internal width of 19 mm to 21 mm, the P Zero Race 26 mm widens slightly, reaching 27 to 28 mm measured, making it an excellent choice for riders looking for a fast but forgiving section. On 19 mm internal rim: the tire maintains a clean aerodynamic profile. On 21 mm rim: it gains in comfort, ideal for long distances or routes rough while taking on a little volume.

Rendering: very good for a tube tire

According to Bicycle Rolling Resistance, the P Zero Race 26mm tubetype boasts a rolling resistance of 12,6 watts at 100 psi, which is in the high average for a premium tubed tire.

  • Pirelli P Zero Race 26mm: 12,6w
  • Continental GP5000 tire 25 mm: 10w
  • Michelin Power Cup 25 mm tire: approximately 11,2w

In real-life conditions, the P Zero feels consistently efficient, especially when combined with a latex chamber. It offers great responsiveness when restarting and remains effective even at low pressure of 6 bars for a light cyclist.

The tread promotes excellent grip.

Grip: reassuring on all terrains

The SmartEVO compound ensures a hold of route irreproachable, both in dry and wet conditions. The tire inspires immediate confidence in fast corners, descents or in the rain. The lean angle is reassuring, but be careful not to overdo it!

I used it on the GF Claveyrolat, with 4000 m of elevation gain in pouring rain: the grip is on par with the Continental GP5000 S TR, which makes it a very safe choice for competition or committed training.

Reliability and durability: exemplary

With 0 punctures in 4500 km, the Tubetype P Zero Race has lived up to its promise of protection. A few superficial cuts are visible, but none required any intervention.

Puncture protection : excellent for a performance tire
Sustainability : still about 10% wear possible at 4 km, regular rubber.
Consistent behavior : no noticeable degradation of grip or performance over time

No punctures to report over nearly 5000 km on routes of mytagno, thanks to TechBELT protection.

Montage and pressure

The montagIt's easy, but it usually depends on the tire/rim pair… No special tools are required. When combined with a latex tube such as Michelin AirComp Latex or Revoloop Road Ultra, the tire offers excellent comfort and performance.

I used 5,5 bar for my 55 kg, below that you can notice some vague sensations when descending.

Head-to-Head Comparison: P Zero Race vs GP5000 S TR

Even though they do not belong to the same technical category tubetype vs tubeless, it is relevant to compare these two models because many hesitate between the two.
