In July 1998, as France rejoiced after its World Cup victory, an unprecedented scandal erupted during the Tour de France, tarnishing the image of French sport. In the heart of Corrèze, the stronghold of former President Jacques Chirac, the Festina affair transformed a festive stage into a global drama. This captivating documentary, directed by Dominique Lenglart, revisits this episode, which shook up cycling and marked a turning point in the fight against doping.

A scandal in the middle of the Grande Boucle
It all began a few days before the Corrèze stage of the 1998 Tour de France. Willy Voet, a soigneur for the Festina team, one of the most prestigious in the peloton, was arrested with an arsenal of performance-enhancing drugs. This arrest revealed an organized doping system within the team, leading to his immediate exclusion from the Tour. In Saint-Priest-de-Gimel, in the back room of a country café, organizers desperately tried to contain the crisis in the face of angry riders and cameras from around the world. But chaos was inevitable.
A few kilometers away, the Château de Bity, owned by the Chirac family, symbolizes the presidential couple's ambition to offer Corrèze an international showcase through the Tour de France. Instead of the hoped-for celebration, the region has become the scene of a crisis that is shaking professional sport.
A crisis with political ramifications
Against the backdrop of the tense cohabitation between Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, and Lionel Jospin's government, the affair added a political dimension. Sports Minister Marie-George Buffet seized the opportunity to intensify the fight against doping, laying the foundations for the creation of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This scandal is not limited to cycling: it calls into question the values of sport and highlights the excesses of a system under pressure.
Testimonies and revelations
Through the stories of key players, such as Willy Voet, who broke the scandal, and Bruno Roussel, director of the Festina team, the documentary traces the behind-the-scenes story of this event. It explores how the affair shattered careers, shook certainties, and forced the world of sport to reinvent itself.
A turning point for cycling
The Festina affair remains a pivotal moment in the history of sport. By exposing doping practices, it not only tarnished the image of the Tour de France but also accelerated reforms aimed at a cleaner sport.
This film, broadcast as part of the program "La Ligne Bleue" on France 3, offers a gripping look into a scandal that has left its mark.
Don't miss this documentary event, June 2, 2025 at 22:30 p.m. on France 3, to relive one of the darkest and most defining moments in world cycling.

I watched the documentary on the Festina affair, which does not reflect the revelations made at the Lille trial in 2000. It originally came from the report made by thetagof the Paranier pharmacy in Veynes, at the end of June 1998, for failure to register a large sale of doping products to Willy Voet in the pharmacy register. Investigators were immediately appointed and placed Willy Voet under surveillance and, without his knowledge, placed a beacon under the Festina car he had taken in Mezieu to go to Belgium to pick up products before going to Dublin for the start of the Tour. Upon his return to France, he was arrested at the border post where the customs officer awaited the investigators who would search the vehicle and the Festina premises in Mezieu. From there, the confessions and arrests of the team boss and doctor in Cholet followed. Then the expulsion of the Festina team before the Brive time trial. As a JRI for the France 2 news on the 1998 Tour, I did the interview with Roussel the day before the start and broadcast it around 22 p.m. via beam from Irish television because the channel's sports department didn't want me to send the story using the channel's live broadcasting facilities. A surreal 1998 Tour with Marco Pantani arriving with an unimaginable lead at Les 2 Alpes, suspended the following year from the Giro for doping and dying at 34 years old!!!!
During the Lille trial in 2000, sitting next to Jean Francois Rhein, we listened to the explanations of the Festina affair, which complemented previous reports.tagis of the case.
