2025 UCI Esports World Cycling Championships: A spectacular new format unveiled by the UCI and MyWhoosh

The International Cycling Union (UCI) and MyWhoosh announce details of the 2025 UCI Esports Cycling World Championships, which will be held on November 15 at the Space 42 Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This fifth edition promises even more intense competition with a new format, following the success of the 2024 edition held in the same city. The event will be streamed live on the UCI and MyWhoosh YouTube channels, to the delight of fans around the world.

A global and inclusive qualification process

Qualifications will begin soon (date to be confirmed) and will run until October. Of the 150 male and 150 female athletes competing in the semifinals, 70% will be selected through their National Federations, while the remaining 30% will advance to the semifinals through public events organized by MyWhoosh. Further details will be announced shortly.

Semi-finals and final: a three-stage format

The semi-finals (October 3) and finals (November 15) will follow an identical format, consisting of three thrilling events: Sprinter's Paradise, Punchers' Playground, and Last Rider Standing. These stages will test the riders' physical and tactical skills.

Sprinter's Paradise: Eight laps on a 1,5 km circuit with points awarded for each intermediate sprint. Designed for explosive sprinters, the event will culminate in a decisive final sprint offering maximum points.

Punchers' Playground: A 12km race featuring steep climbs, two intermediate sprints, and two timed climbs (KOM). This stage will reward power and tactical acumen, with a final sprint deciding the ranking.

Last Rider Standing: An elimination race over a 7,2 km climb with a 554 m elevation gain. Riders will be progressively eliminated at checkpoints, with points awarded based on ranking and survival time. The last rider standing will win the stage.

In the semifinals, the top 20 men and women, determined by cumulative points, will qualify for the final in Abu Dhabi, joined by athletes with wild cards. In the final, the cumulative points from the three stages will determine the 2025 UCI world champions.

A competition that lives up to expectations

David Lappartient, President of the UCI, was enthusiastic: “ After a memorable 2024 edition, MyWhoosh is pushing the boundaries with an innovative and demanding format for 2025. This championship promises to be a captivating spectacle, where only the best will win the rainbow jersey. »
Matthew Smithson, Director of Esports at MyWhoosh, added: “ This championship embodies innovation and fairness. With a format designed to challenge athletes and captivate fans, we are proud to collaborate with the UCI to advance virtual cycling on the world stage. »
