The protocol test on the suspended “Maximum Gear”

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has taken note of the decision of the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) which orders the provisional suspension of the Protocol of Test on the “Maximum Gear”, following the complaint from the equipment manufacturer SRAM. But the international body contestand this decision.

This protocol, which aimed to assess the impact of limiting gear ratios on race speed and rider safety, was to be tested during the Tour of Guangxi (October 14-19, 2025). Due to this measure, the test planned is canceled and the protocol is temporarily suspended.

In a press release, the UCI says it is surprised by the intervention of a competition authority in an initiative supported by all stakeholders in professional cycling. It considers it surprising that a complaint filed by an American company against a Swiss sports association, concerning tests planned in China, be processed by a Belgian authority.

The aim of the protocol was to analyze the effect of limiting gears to improve the safety of riders, other participants in the peloton and spectators.

The UCI announces its intention to appeal the ABC decision and is considering adjustments to the protocol to allow the implementation of the tests desired by the stakeholders of professional cycling.
